When someone scans it

Most current iPhone and Android cameras recognize a WiFi code and offer to join the network. The phone then remembers it like any network joined by hand.

Before you print

  • Type the network name exactly as your phone shows it, including capitals and spaces.
  • Print the network name next to the code for anyone who can't scan.
  • Anyone who sees the code can join, so use a guest network if your router has one.

What's in the pattern

The WiFi network format

WIFI:T:WPA;S:Cafe Guest;P:espresso42;H:false;;

T is the security type, S the network name, P the password. Characters like ; and : are escaped for you.

Questions

Is my WiFi password sent anywhere?
No. The code is drawn in your browser and nothing you type is sent to our servers. The password does end up in the printed pattern, so anyone who scans the code can read it.
What happens if I change the password?
The old code stops working, because the password is part of the pattern. Make a new code with the new password and print it again.
Which security option should I pick?
WPA / WPA2 / WPA3 for networks with a password, which is almost all of them. WEP only for very old routers, and No password for open networks.
